Dan Eldon essay
Dan Eldon
Some
people may think that journalist have easy jobs and all they have to do is sit
at a desk and write but I say otherwise. Many Journalist risk their lives doing
what they love on warzones and sometimes even in hostile territories. I believe
that these journalist are not crazy and are in fact heroes because they shed
light on topics that we may know very little about. They are not heroes only
because they get us information but because they do their job willingly without
question. A journalist in the documentary by the name of Des Wright said
“covering war is just like fighting in war” safety is not guaranteed when on
the job.
In
the documentary Martin Bell brought up a great point when he said “it wasn’t
because of the military that the world knew, it was because of us” many of our world
leaders usually avoid informing the general population when something happens
but journalist will pick up the slack. Being a journalist must take an enormous
amount of courage that most of us cannot say we have. Another point Bell makes
is that journalist have a “front row seat in the making of history” which may
be one of the many motivations journalist have when on the job. I believe Amy
Eldon is doing a great thing going on a journalistic journey to find out what
happened to her brother it shows that journalism may have been something that
greatly bonded them with one another. It also shows that journalism may just
run in their blood but whatever the case may be I believe Amy Eldon is very
courageous for doing what she has done.
I
believe some of these stories do provide inspiration not only to pursue the
career of a journalist but also it inspires you to appreciate the line of work
that they do. These stories show it takes much more then knowing how to handle
a camera to do their job and I believe journalist receive less credit than what
should be given.
Mid term
“Trying to determine
what is going on in the world by reading newspaper is like trying to tell time
by watching the second hand of a clock”
- Ben Hecht
I
agree and disagree with the quote above about journalism. I believe that this
quote may be true in some sense because journalists do not always tell the
truth when it comes to their stories. This may occur in what is known as yellow
journalism which consists of screaming headlines, scams, frauds and more.
Journalists may also adjust their stories with false information in order to
make it seem more interesting to their peers and editor. They also may conjure
up a completely made up story in order to get it published for their own
benefit. In order to do this they must create fake quotes, contacts, and even
might have to take it further and create their own fake website.
This tactic was once used by a young
journalist named Stephen Glass. Almost all of the stories the journalist wrote
while working for the paper were fake. Though they were fake with the use of
false evidence he was able to get his work printed with very few problems.
Stephen Glass was eventually caught when he was asked by his editor to provide
more in depth information such as meeting places and contacts. This journalists
actions were so outrageous that the film “Shattered Glass” was made. Also, some
journalist information will a lot of the time be biased which is not good when
engaging an argument.
This
quote in some ways is also disagreeable. Some but not all journalist lie, they
help keep the public informed on some things hidden in the shadows such as with
the Watergate scandal. Investigative Journalism was used to bring out the
political corruption that was happening in the white house and eventually led
to the resigning of President Nixon.
Death.
The intangible man
that scares us,
The man that causes us to fear the inevitable,
Death,
He comes in many forms,
Sometimes he’s seen as a bright light and other times he’s
dressed in all black,
Death,
He came for me one day but I dared not go with him,
He’d be back I was sure of it,
Death,
He came for me again this time grabbing my wrist,
I jerked back hard and escaped his grip,
Death,
He came one final time this time grabbing my wrist harder,
Again I pulled away but now he gave chase,
Death,
I ran and ran but got exhausted and fell,
He caught up grabbed my leg as tightly as possible and
dragged me away,
Death.

Hollister California is a popular
brand of clothing designed for ages 14 to 18 and primarily made up of casual
wear and styles. Prices may seem a bit expensive, ranging from $25 to $80 for a
single piece of clothing, customers continuously find their way back. If you
think that price range may be too much for you, think again. Hollister often
runs end of the season sales when prices dramatically drop to $15 to $45 for a
piece of clothing. Hollister is a common
fashion to see on high school students who are the real targets for the brand.
Abercrombie & Fitch is the
parent brand of Hollister California. This is also a popular store among teens,
selling everything from t-shirts, sundresses, pants, and even fragrances. Pants
also seem to be the more popular item that customers enjoy. Prices usually
range from $30 to $80 and they only offer standard sizes. One way Abercrombie
& Fitch tends to attract customers is the unique appearance of the front
and inside of the store that they sell. The smell of the cologne is so strong,
a customer can smell it from outside of the front door.
Pac sun is another store that offers
casual Californian fashions such as Hollister. Pac Sun usually offers summer
wear such as bathing suits, tank tops, and shorts. In other seasons they also
offer t-shirts and pants. Pac Sun’s sizes go from extra- small to extra-large
making it an excellent place to shop if you are any size. Prices in this store
range roughly from $20 to $200 that’s a bit pricey, but it still is an
excellent place to shop overall.
Just like the other stores, American Eagle Outfitters sells
casual clothing fit for the average teen. One thing that makes American Eagle a
“must go to” store is simply the prices. One item ranges from $20 to $40 making
it one of the cheapest if not the cheapest store to shop at. Here you can find
basic tees, jeans, and dresses that are really well made. Sizes range from
extra-extra-small to extra-extra-large making it a fine store for boys and
young men alike.
